Why Fluid Helix Chose CurrentWare

Businesses rely on MSPs such as Fluid Helix to safeguard business data, expand their capabilities, and ultimately enhance operational efficiency and productivity. By entrusting IT management to experts, companies can focus on growth and innovation while enjoying the peace of mind that comes with a well-managed IT infrastructure.

But being a managed service provider (MSP) comes with unique challenges. Technology is constantly changing, margins are getting tighter, and managing client expectations is a perennial challenge. Fluid Helix leverages the technology of its partner vendors such as CurrentWare to ensure the business goals of both itself and its clients are met.

Reliability

Fluid Helix is entrusted with protecting their clients against the ever-evolving cybersecurity landscape.  Part of this process is ensuring that the security tools they provide are consistent, reliable, and unobtrusive.

With CurrentWare, Jude and the Fluid Helix team gain the confidence that their security policies are consistently enforced to mitigate against common cybersecurity threats.

When I was looking for WebTitan alternatives, I came across CurrentWare. I chose them because they had the best control and price point for our needs. Then when I needed extra support to get up and running, they jumped right in.

WebTitan worked okay at first, but after a while, the users started experiencing performance issues. We manage many remote sites, some without high-speed internet, so I knew we needed to switch to something lightweight that wouldn’t interfere with day-to-day operations. Thankfully, BrowseControl fit the bill perfectly.

Our previous web filtering provider, WebTitan, needed to be more consistent in how it worked. Several times, policy updates we pushed out weren’t working as expected; we could access websites that should have been blocked or couldn’t access what should have been allowed.

I reached out to WebTitan support and got no response whatsoever—we couldn’t operate like that. I need to trust that I can send out the policy, and it’ll work, so I can move on to other things.

Affordability

No business, no matter how small, is immune from being the victim of cyber attacks. CurrentWare provides critical security controls at an advantageous price to keep security accessible to everyone. This translates to simple-to-sell solutions that MSPs can rely on to grow the profitability and capabilities of their business.

The price of CurrentWare is astounding for what you get. They offered me a competitive margin, and not once have any of my clients balked at the cost when I pitched their software. This makes my job much easier since we can move straight into the benefits and logistics.

Scalability

When managing increasingly complex IT environments for multiple clients, the risks of scaling up operations can increase. With CurrentWare, you can effortlessly add additional clients, devices, and CurrentWare modules without the need to redeploy.

Over the many years we’ve been doing this we haven’t found anything as easy to use and scalable as CurrentWare—both on our side and for the client side. It runs so smoothly that our clients don’t even notice it’s there until they try to access a blocked site.

Hospitality

No matter how great a vendor’s technology is, it means nothing without quality customer service and capable technical support.

CurrentWare prides itself on the quality of its customer success, technical support, and sales teams. We support our customers every step of the way—whether they’re just starting a free trial or actively using CurrentWare in their business.

I appreciate having the comfort of knowing that the CurrentWare team is there for me. Their eagerness to understand the needs of my business and make sure we’re up and running makes all the difference for us.

If I call or email them I know they’re going to respond quickly and work diligently to help me out—That alone was an important factor for me in making my decision to stick with them.

When I’m considering new software for my clients, I don’t just want to order online, install it, and have that be the end of my connection with the vendor.

That’s why I’ve been really impressed with the CurrentWare team; it’s been a good relationship!

I appreciate the comfort of knowing that they’re there when I need them and I’m not just going to be stuck with a generic answer from someone who doesn’t understand the product.

Simplicity

CurrentWare’s simplicity and privilege-controlled operator accounts give Jude the flexibility to provide trusted clients with limited access to the management console to allow for ad-hoc changes.

While their clients can readily request access to blocked websites via the block page, some would rather jump in and make a few clicks for simple changes such as providing access to resources outside of their whitelist.

We use a deny-by-default approach with BrowseControl for clients who only need access to specific resources. This keeps them from stumbling onto anything that might put the security of their network at risk.

The odd time they need to request access to a blocked site, they can submit a request right from the block page, and I can deploy the policy change in seconds. The process is so simple; we just log in to the console, add the site, deploy the change, and they’re up and running.

CurrentWare is so easy to navigate that I can give my more hands-on clients limited access to the management portal to make on-the-fly changes. If they opt to add CurrentWare’s monitoring software, our clients could get reports as needed or I could set up automated reporting and alerting based on what they need to see.

Since we went with a deny-by-default approach, we knew there’d be some requests to add sites to the allow list that we didn’t think of at first. Thankfully that’s been easy to manage; as requests trickle in we can add them quickly and move on to other things. The most satisfying thing is that it just works every time.

Fluid Helix’s Goals as a Managed Service Provider

Client & Business Growth

I want to sit down with potential customers and show them the benefits of a dedicated IT consultant.

I want to be proactive to make sure that me, my organization, and my clients aren’t stuck reacting to things that could’ve been mitigated.

By managing these risks we can focus on the things that’ll help us all grow.

Product Knowledge & Trust

My clients rely on me to be the expert of the products and services I offer.

All they want to know is how it benefits them and that it’s going to work.

Bringing in our expertise lets my clients focus on the needs of their business while I manage everything else for them.

Ensuring Client & Data Safety

Before we added BrowseControl to our offerings, our clients had no real control over employee web browsing; it was them vs the Wild West of the web.

They were struggling with staff visiting sites they shouldn’t be on and getting themselves into trouble, downloading viruses, and all that.

“Any time I come across another company dealing with a similar situation, I’m quick to mention these guys. I absolutely recommend them and think that they’re a good fit for anyone who needs to manage internet access and keep an eye on what’s going on.

Learn How CurrentWare Makes the Difference for MSPs

MSP business leaders face a mix of competing priorities. They’re expected to meet increasingly complex client needs, all while working with the pressure to do more with less.

CurrentWare’s simple-to-use, fairly priced, and reliable web filtering, user activity monitoring, and data loss prevention solutions provide MSPs with the critical security controls they need to keep their clients safe from insider data theft, common cybersecurity threats, and time theft.

Why Fluid Helix Transitioned From WebTitan to CurrentWare

Fluid Helix’s founder, Jude McCoy, knew that web filtering is an essential part of any MSP’s cybersecurity risk mitigation strategy. Unfortunately, when they deployed WebTitan, they found that they weren’t getting the reliability and support they needed to confidently offer this critical capability in their managed services portfolio.

After finding CurrentWare’s web filtering software BrowseControl, Fluid Helix readily deployed a proof-of-concept that provided them with everything they needed to know it was the right internet restriction solution for their clients.

Election Night Reporting Cybersecurity Challenges

Advances in voting technology have transformed American elections by dramatically improving the efficiency, accessibility, and visibility of the voting process.

While these advancements have produced a significant boon in productivity, they are not without their risks.

The threat of interference in elections by foreign governments and other bad actors are top-of-mind for citizens and election officials alike. Voting technologies need robust cybersecurity protocols to ensure that the integrity of elections are upheld in the modern age.

What is Election Night Reporting?

Election night reporting (ENR) refers to the systems and processes that are used to aggregate and communicate unofficial election results to the public and media after polls close, typically through a website.

While ENR results are always unofficial, the public often perceives unofficial election results as final.

Because of this fact, it is critical that those involved in the election process provide necessary safeguards to protect the integrity of the voting process.

Air Gaps vs Flow of Information

The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), an independent, bipartisan commission charged with developing guidance to meet requirements set out by the Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA), recommends several cybersecurity measures to protect election data against bad actors.

One critical measure recommended by the EAC is the use of air gapping to ensure that the tabulating machines used to count votes are not connected to any network, which would increase their attack surface to risks such as malware, denial-of-service, and man-in-the-middle attacks, among other risks.

This poses a unique challenge for the election night reporting process: Tabulating machines must remain air gapped to protect them from external threats, but the ENR machines that consolidate the data from the tabulating machines need to be connected to other networks to provide the data to the public and the media.

“If USB storage devices are required, enterprise software should be used that can configure systems to allow only the use of specific devices. An inventory of such devices should be maintained.”

The Center for Internet Security

Securing Removable Media

To allow for secure data transfer without compromising the air gap, removable media devices are used to transfer XML files from the tabulating machine into the ENR system.

Unfortunately, removable media devices are not without their risks either; they can be exposed to malware and compromised at the supplier level, through a previous use in an infected machine, or through a purposeful infection by a bad actor.

These risks are mitigated through complimentary security controls including:

To ensure the efficacy of these measures it’s critical that only authorized removable media devices are connected to election technology.

AccessPatrol’s Role in Securing Election Night Results

AccessPatrol ensures that the integrity of the Election Night Reporting process is not undermined by the introduction of rogue portable storage devices

Lockdown USB Devices

Election night reporting relies on a precise process designed to quickly, accurately, and safely transfer each candidate’s vote totals into the ENR system so that data can be made available to the public.

CurrentWare’s state and local government customers use AccessPatrol’s device control features to ensure that only authorized removable drives that have been pre-vetted for their security and reliability are used to transmit data from vote tabulation machines to ENR systems.

Air gapping measures are further enforced by using AccessPatrol to block the use of wireless peripherals such as Bluetooth and WiFi.

Audit USB Activity

AccessPatrol’s device activity tracking complements the manual monitoring of chain-of-custody procedures with intuitive reports, dashboards, alerts, and activity logs that track the use of every portable storage device.

These insights allow election officials and IT security teams to verify:

In the event that unauthorized removable drives are connected to protected computers, designated officials are sent an alert with all the information they need to investigate the security incident.

Restrict File Transfers

The file transfer blocking feature ensures that even authorized removable drives are strictly limited to transferring only the relevant XML files required for the ENR process.

Ensuring that extraneous files cannot be transferred to or from protected systems via removable media devices mitigates the possibility of malicious files being introduced to critical election technology.

Allow Backups to Trusted Devices

AccessPatrol ensures back-ups of election results reports can be transmitted to trusted storage devices on a regular schedule—all without giving threat actors the opportunity to copy that data to unauthorized devices.

These backups are crucial to ensure that election data can be recovered quickly and restored in the event of hardware failure, cyberattacks, and other data security risks.
