Internet Restriction in Libraries
The Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) has approximately 150 computers that are used mainly for public use. While Internet access is essential for their users, total exposure to the web would compromise the library to viral infections and hackers.
In order to allow access to authorized sites only, CALS, implemented BrowseControl, the “Internet Access Control” software.
“CALS used BrowseControl mainly on public computers. We setup computers specifically to do certain browsing such as a catalog computer can only access our website, our catalog system and the online research databases that we subscribe to. On the staff computers where BrowseControl is also installed we block staff from accessing Facebook, YouTube and personal email at while they are working at public information desks,” said the Manager of Computer & Network Systems at CALS.
“I used to have a Linux Proxy server to handle this but wanted software that would have a GUI interface and that is why I purchased Browse Control.”
BrowseControl is CurrentWare’s flagship solution for Internet blocking and filtering across an enterprise wide network. Block inappropriate websites through the Blocked List. Enable access to authorized sites through the Allowed List (White List). Improve productivity by blocking social networking sites such as Facebook, online games or chat programs.
