Before you Begin
1. Back Up your files
- Export your Allowed list and Blocked list
- Back up your BrowseControl database
- v2/3: \Program Files\Codework\BrowseControl\BCServer\CWBCFBDB
- v4.X: \Program Files\CurrentWare\cwServer\CWNPFB
2. Configure your System Settings
- Log into your computers with administrative rights
- Enable these ports on your Firewall: 3050, 1024, 8990, 8991 (for TCP and UDP).
- Supported Platforms: Windows 2003/2008, XP, Vista and 7. For both 32-bit and 64-bit
Choose the version you are upgrading from
Upgrading from version 4.X to the latest version 4
The following instructions are for upgrading a previous version of 4.X to the latest version.
01. Upgrading the CurrentWare Server, Console and BrowseControl Solution
- Run the CurrentWare.exe to upgrade the Currentware Server and Console.
- Run the BrowseControl.msi to upgrade the BrowseControl solution.
02. Upgrading the CurrentWare Client
The upgrade of the CurrentWare Client can be done automatically.
- Make sure the following option is enabled: Install > Client > Remote Install > Upgrade > “Automatically upgrade clients from version 4.0.0.0 and above”.
- When the old client connects to the new CurrentWare Server, it will take a minute to upgrade itself to the latest version.
- Once the client is upgraded, the latest version will be listed under the detail pane on the CurrentWare Console
- If the clients do not connect, you may need to reboot the client computers
- Alternatively, you can take the cwClient.msi file and run it on the workstations
02a. Upgrading the CurrentWare Client with 32-bit and 64-bit Clients
The upgrade of the CurrentWare Client can be done automatically.
- Download the 32-bit client (cwClient.msi) and 64-bit client (cwClient64.msi) from the download page.
- Put both of the client files in the following directory: \Program Files\CurrentWare\cwClient\
- On your CurrentWare Console, go to Install > Clients > Remote Install
- Under the 32-bit tab, browse to the cwClient.msi file
- Under the 64-bit tab, browse to the cwClient64.msi file
- Select Upgrade and check the option “Automatically upgrade clients from version 4.0.0.0 and above”
- When the old client connects to the new CurrentWare Server, it will take a minute to upgrade itself to the latest version.
- Once the client is upgraded, the latest version will be listed under the detail pane on the CurrentWare Console
- If the clients do not connect, you may need to reboot the client computers
- Alternatively, you can take the cwClient.msi or the cwClient64.msi file and run it on the workstations
Upgrading from version 2.X, 3.X to version 4.X
Version 4.X is a redesigned console. A reinstall of the CurrentWare Console, Server, Solution and Client is required to upgrade from version 2.X or 3.X to version 4.X
Note: if you have a previous version of BrowseControl and BrowseReporter installed, both products must be uninstalled in order to upgrade to version 4.
01. Uninstall the BrowseControl Clients from the BrowseControl Console
- Launch the BrowseControl Console. Right click on a computer or a folder > select the first entry > select Services > select Uninstall.
- Restarting your client workstations for a successful uninstall.
- Repeat the steps on all the folders until all BrowseControl Clients are uninstalled from your network.
02. Installing the CurrentWare Server, Console and the BrowseControl Solution
- Uninstall the BrowseControl Server from Control Panel > Add or Remove Program
- After the BrowseControl Console and Server are uninstalled, run the CurrentWare.exe file in the downloaded package to install the CurrentWare Console.
- After the installation of the CurrentWare Console, run the BrowseControl.msi file in the downloaded package to install the BrowseControl Solution.
03a. Installing the CurrentWare Client – Method #1: Remote Client Install
- On the CurrentWare Console, click on Install > Client > Remote Install
- Browse to the path of the cwClient msi file on the Server computer (the default location is Program Files\CurrentWare\Cwclient\cwClient.msi
- Select the reboot option
- Select Fresh Install and put in the IP address or Computer name of your CurrentWare Server
(Optional) Put in a CurrentWare Client password - Click Next.
- Select the computers on your network that you want to perform the upgrade to. Click Next.
- Enter the Username and Password of an Administrative account for the client computer. Click Next.
- The CurrentWare Client will be upgraded on the selected computers.
03b. Installing the CurrentWare Client – Method #2: Local Install
- On the CurrentWare Server computer, copy the Client setup file to a removable media or a network drive.
- The client setup file is located under C:\Program Files\CurrentWare\Cwclient\cwClient.msi.
- Run cwclient.msi on the client computer to complete the installation.
Upgrading from version 3.X to version 3.X
The upgrade from this version is simple. All you need to do is run the new setup file on the BrowseControl Server and Console. And then, deploy the BrowseControl Client setup file to the existing workstations.
01. Upgrade the BrowseControl Server and Console
- Please close the BrowseControl Console.
- Make a backup of the database file CWBCFBDB located on the Server PC under Program Files\Codework\BrowseControl\BCServer.
- Run the setup file [highlight]cwBC.exe[/highlight] to upgrade the existing 3.0-3.2 server/console components to version 3.4 of BrowseControl.
02. Upgrade the BrowseControl Client Method #1: Remote Client Install
- On the BrowseControl menu bar click on Advanced > Remote Client Install
- Browse to the path of the Client msi file on the Server computer (the default location is Program Files\Codework\BrowseControl\BCClient\cwbcClient.msi
- Select the Upgrade option
- Click Next.
- Select the computers on your network that you want to perform the upgrade to. Click Next.
- Enter the Username and Password of an Administrative account for the client computer. Click Next.
- The BrowseControl Client will be upgraded on the selected computers.
03. Upgrade the BrowseControl Client Method #2: Local Upgrade
- On the BrowseControl Server computer, copy the Client setup file to a removable media or a network drive.
- The client setup file is located under C:\Program Files\Codework\BrowseControl\BCClient\cwBCClient.msi.
- Run this file on the client computer to complete the upgrade.
Upgrading from version 2.1 to version 3.X
The upgrade from this version is simple. All you need to do is run the new setup file on the BrowseControl Server and Console. And then, deploy the BrowseControl Client setup file to the existing workstations.
01. Upgrade the BrowseControl Server and Console
- Please close the BrowseControl Console.
- Make a backup of the database file CWBCFBDB located on the Server PC under Program Files\Codework\BrowseControl\BCServer.

- Select the Upgrade option
- Click Next.

- The BrowseControl Client will be upgraded on the selected computers.
03. Upgrade the BrowseControl Client Method #2: Local Upgrade
- On the BrowseControl Server computer, copy the Client setup file to a removable media or a network drive.
- The client setup file is located under C:\Program Files\Codework\BrowseControl\BCClient\cwBCClient.msi.
- Run this file on the client computer to complete the upgrade.
Upgrading from version 2.0 to version 3.X
The upgrade from this version require you to uninstall the BrowseControl Client first. The best way to uninstall the client is through the BrowseControl Console. After you have uninstall the client, you can proceed to upgrade the BrowseControl Server and Console from the setup file and deploy the new BrowseControl Clients to the existing workstations.
01. Uninstall the BrowseControl clients remotely from the console
- On the BrowseControl Console, right click on a group, select the first entry on the short cut menu. Select Services à Uninstall. This will remotely uninstall the clients within that group. Repeat for all groups.
- To complete the uninstall successfully, please reboot the Client PCs.
02. Upgrade the BrowseControl Server and Console
- Please close the BrowseControl Console.
- Make a backup of the database file CWBCFBDB located on the Server PC under Program Files\Codework\BrowseControl\BCServer.
- Run the setup file cwBC.exe to upgrade the existing 3.0-3.2 server/console components to version 3.4 of BrowseControl.
03a. Upgrade the BrowseControl Client Method #1: Remote Client Install
- On the BrowseControl menu bar click on Advanced > Remote Client Install
- Browse to the path of the Client msi file on the Server computer (the default location is Program Files\Codework\BrowseControl\BCClient\cwbcClient.msi
- Select the Upgrade option
- Click Next.
- Select the computers on your network that you want to perform the upgrade to. Click Next.
- Enter the Username and Password of an Administrative account for the client computer. Click Next.
- The BrowseControl Client will be upgraded on the selected computers.
03b. Upgrade the BrowseControl Client Method #2: Local Upgrade
- On the BrowseControl Server computer, copy the Client setup file to a removable media or a network drive.
- The client setup file is located under C:\Program Files\Codework\BrowseControl\BCClient\cwBCClient.msi.
- Run this file on the client computer to complete the upgrade.
Upgrading from version 1.7 to version 3.X
The upgrade from this version require you to completely uninstall all components of BrowseControl (Server, Console and Client). The direct upgrade path is not available on this version because the database schema has been revamped.
01. Uninstall the BrowseControl clients remotely from the console
On the BrowseControl Console, right click on a group (or a computer), select the first entry on the right click menu, select Services and Uninstall. This will remotely uninstall the clients within that group. Repeat for all groups and computers.
02. Uninstall the BrowseControl Server and Console
- Go to Add/Remove Programs
- Remove BrowseControl Server
- Remove any programs with the name Firebird
